Cell-Less Cell Therapy: The Secretome as a New Frontier in Medicine
Thursday, September 5, 2024 03:00 PM - 04:30 PM
F4-5
Plenary

Co-Chairs:

  • Massimiliano Gnecchi, MD, PhD, University of Pavia, Italy
  • Erja Kerkela, PhD, Finnish Red Cross Blood Service, Finland

Speakers

  • Francesco Dazzi, PhD, King’s College London/AstraZeneca, United Kingdom - Non-cellular functions of MSC: is there a need for programming?
  • Margarida Serra, PhD, iBET - Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica, Portugal - Advancing the manufacture of hPSC-derived EVs for cardiac regenerative medicine
  • Hendrik Jan Ankersmit, MD, University of Vienna, Austria - Secretome derived from stressed white blood cells - from preclinical research, GMP and Phase II trial in diabetic foot ulcer

This plenary session aims to provide a state-of-the-art description of the production and translation of novel therapies based on secretome and extracellular vesicles. Soluble mediators produced and secreted by intact human cells can be used both in diagnosis and clinical application for regenerative and personalized medicine. The experts will revise and discuss both manufacturing challenges to the relevance of alternative soluble mediators such as apoptotic bodies or senesome. Emphasis will be given to emerging/enabling technologies and preclinical/clinical approaches.

Session Objectives

  1. Learning how cell secretome and EVs for clinical use are produced on a large scale
  2. Learning the latest preclinical or early phase results in using secretome-derive products
  3. Learning about the clinical relevance of apoptotic bodies and senesome
