Julie Kanter, M.D. is Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. Dr. Kanter is currently a physician scientist at the University of Alabama (Birmingham) where she co-leads the Lifespan Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center. She has two main research focuses: advancing novel therapies through improved understanding of biology and clinical endpoints and using dissemination and implementation science to improve access to care in sickle cell disease.

Dr. Kanter has received funding from the NIH/NHLBI including an R01 on improving stroke screening in sickle cell disease, a U01 to form a sickle cell disease implementation center and an more recent R01 focused on improving the recruitment of unaffiliated adults with sickle cell disease into care. She also co-leads the southeastern regional Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) -funded SCD network, EMBRACE of which Augusta University is a site and serves as the PI of the Center for Disease Control (CDC)-funded sickle cell disease surveillance program inn Alabama. Currently, Dr. Kanter is also the president of the National Alliance of Sickle Cell Centers (NASCC), the first network of sickle cell centers dedicated to reducing barriers and improve access to quality care for people living with sickle cell disease.
