Frank Luyten MD, PhD, Prof. Emeritus Medical/Scientific Director RegmedXB KU Leuven Antwerpen Belgium


Frank Luyten is Professor Emeritus at the Faculty of Medicine at the KU Leuven, Belgium. He was appointed in October 2020 as Medical/Scientific Director of REGMED-XB, a public-private platform of the Netherlands and Flanders, focusing on the development and industrialization of novel therapies in the field of Regenerative Medicine (www.regmedxb.com). He obtained his MD degree in 1980, PhD degree and Board Certification in Rheumatology at the University of Ghent, Belgium in 1986. He spent his postdoctoral training at the National Institute of Dental Research, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, USA between 1986 and 1991. He subsequently became Group leader of the Developmental Biology Unit at the Bone Research Branch at the NIH, Bethesda, MD, USA 1992-1997. In 1997, he became Chairman of the Division of Rheumatology at the University Hospitals Leuven and full Professor and Director of the Skeletal Biology & Engineering Center and the Prometheus Division at the KU Leuven, Belgium till Sept. 2020. He has research expertise/experience in skeletal biology and regenerative medicine, supported by contributions in the field of cellular therapeutics and adult stem cells for the regeneration of skeletal tissues, in particular cartilage, bone and joints. His clinical expertise is the field of arthritic diseases, in particular osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.
