Atsushi Iwama is a professor of the Institute of Medical Science, the University of Tokyo. He obtained his M.D. in Niigata University and Ph.D. in Kumamoto University in 1987 and 1996, respectively. He completed an internship and residency at Niigata University Hospital and Jichi Medical School Hospital, respectively. Originally starting his training in clinical hematology, he has specialized in research on hematopoietic stem cells and hematological malignancies. He has nurtured and grown his laboratory since he became independent as a full professor at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Graduate School of Medicine, Chiba University in 2005. From March 2018, he has been appointed as a professor at the current institute.
