Eapen K. Jacob MD Medical Director and Program Director (Cell Therapy Fellowship) Mayo Clinic

Dr. Eapen Jacob is a clinical pathologist who specializes in Transfusion Medicine and Cellular Therapy. He is an associate professor and consultant in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota (MCR) where he is the medical director of the Human Cellular Therapy Laboratory and the Program Director of the Cellular Therapy Fellowship. Dr. Jacob received his M.D. from Mayo Medical School and did a two-year stint as a Howard Hughes N.I.H. Research Scholar studying immunology. It is that interest in immunology and laboratory science that pulled him out of an Ophthalmology Residency into the Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency Program and Surgical Pathology Fellowship at Mayo. This was followed by a Hematopathology Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and finally the Transfusion Medicine Fellowship at Mayo.

He has been able to pursue his interests in human immune system leading the Human Cellular Therapy Laboratory which supports one of the largest blood and marrow transplant programs in the country. Dr. Jacob also helps direct two additional labs at MCR which handle both internally manufactured novel cell therapies (MSC, DC, CART) as well as logistics for external products. He has had a long-standing interest in medical education as a faculty member of the Transfusion Medicine Division, the Chair of the Transfusion Medicine Fellowship Clinical Competency Committee and one of the founders of the first dedicated Cellular Therapy Fellowship. This fellowship matriculated its first fellow in 2018 with the goal of educating leaders in the manufacture of cellular therapies filling a gap in the space between preclinical research and human clinical therapies.
