"Professor Hanne Scholz is a senior researcher at Oslo University Hospital (OUS) and the University of Oslo. She is the director of the human Islet Isolation and Islet Transplant Program in Norway. She is an expert in cell isolation and transplantation, including standardization, validation, and transfer of protocols into full GMP requirements (ATMP products for clinical studies). She also serves as the deputy director at the Center of Excellence for ""Organ-on-a-Chip"" research. Here, research groups strive to develop an ""organ on a chip"" platform containing insulin-producing tissue, enabling simulation and study of metabolic tissue in the laboratory.
Scholz's research group focuses on developing novel cell-based therapies for treating diabetes in both preclinical and clinical settings. Specifically, they investigate the ability of stem cells to differentiate into functional insulin-producing islet cells in the laboratory. This could potentially offer a cure for type 1 diabetes by replacing the damaged insulin-producing cells with these newly generated ones.
Dr. Scholz has authored several book chapters and published over 80 scientific articles. Additionally, she serves as the secretary of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplantation Association (IPITA), member of the Nordic steering group for Islet Cell Transplantation, member of Oslo Diabetes Research Center, and former councilor of the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT 2019-2023)."
