Bernd Giebel Prof. University Hospital Essen Essen Germany

"Bernd Giebel studied biology in Cologne and received his PhD in 1996. He then joined the Heinrich-Heine-University of Düsseldorf in 1999, focusing on human hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. In 2008, he transitioned to the University Hospital Essen, where his research expanded to extracellular vesicles (EVs). His work, particularly on mesenchymal stem/stromal cell-derived EVs (MSC-EVs), showcased their therapeutic potential in human graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) patients and various animal models. His primary goal is to efficiently translate MSC-EVs into clinical use, leading to his appointment as a full professor for Translational Extracellular Vesicle Research at the University Hospital Essen in 2023.

In additions, he aims to promote national and international EV research. In this context, Giebel served as the founding president of the German Society of Extracellular Vesicles (GSEV) from 2017 to 2023. Since 2018, he is co-chairing the exosome committee of the International Society of Gene and Cell Therapy (ISCT). Additionally, he is part of the scientific advisory board of the SME companies Mursla LTD and PL BioScience and a founding director of Exosla LTD."
