Margarida Serra Head of Lab iBET - Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica Oeiras Portugal

"Margarida Serra is the Head of Stem and Immune Cells Bioengineering Laboratory of iBET and Invited Assistant Professor at FCT-NOVA, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.

She holds a PhD in Engineering and Technology Sciences, from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa in 2011. She did part of her PhD studies at the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering (Germany), Cellartis AB (Sweden), and University Clinic of Cologne (Germany). The key research line is driven by the vision to bridge engineering and (stem) cell biology, with the goal of accelerating next generation cell-based therapies. The key research line has been focused on streamlining robust manufacturing of cell therapy products with improved functionality. In the last 5 years, her research has focused on the development of novel and biology-inspired cell culturing strategies that recreate environmental conditions excelling growth and differentiation/maturation of human pluripotent and adult stem cells and the production of derived extracellular vesicles, through metabolic and process understanding. This knowledge is also being applied to accelerate the manufacturing of CAR-T cells. Aiming at accelerating the translation of cell therapy products into the clinic, she has been applying robust multi-parametric techniques including omics technologies as complementary analytical tools to support bioprocess optimization and characterization of cells’ quality attributes including identity and potency. Margarida Serra has published over 59 papers, 2 book chapters and supervised 13 PhD and 28 MSc students.
