Don’t Move to Cloud. IMPROVE to Cloud!
When Scholastic Book Fairs first implemented OTM in 2017, we were set up On Prem. Our original order integration was to our legacy AS400 system, and order updates were queued and sent in batches to OTM a few times per hour. Data frequently got out of sync due to transmission failures between 3 separate systems. The creation and management of Master Data address IDs was also set up as integration among 3 systems, and data being out of sync was a regular occurrence that caused order failures.
When we started to prep for the move to the cloud, the Technical team took a lot of time to review all workflows, especially within the middleware and make vast improvements. The direct integration to our order management system meant we could now have almost real time updates from Salesforce to OTM and from OTM back to Salesforce. The application of Address Location IDs is now happening witihin Salesforce and is no longer a burden to keep in sync within OTM’s table of these location IDs.
Other benefits we have seen from moving to cloud includes the ease of getting patches and regular updates from Oracle. Updates on Prem were large, involved a lot more system down time, did not get produced often, and involved a lot of regression testing to make sure everything that was changed was functional. Moving to Cloud allowed updates to come more frequently and are easier to do regression testing for. It also allows us to receive patches more easily and faster if a bug is identified.
Learning Objective 1
Benefits we have seen from moving to Cloud
Learning Objective 2
Other improvements/re-work we did at the same time we were moving to Cloud
Learning Objective 3
Things we could have done differently to make transition to Cloud better

Home Transport Operations Implementation
Clayton Homes was founded in 1966 and is proud of its history of providing affordable, quality homes. Most of the supply chain management for Clayton Homes is done within one of four main business units referred to as the Home Building Group (HBG). Historically, all the plant locations had autonomy in operations and vendors managed freight inbound. Like many companies, the pandemic surfaced gaps in the control and visibility of HBG’s Supply Chain. It was at this time, that the company decided to make a change to improve capabilities to create a more reliable, innovative, sustainable, and efficient Supply Chain. HBG chose to do this through centralized transportation management and implementation of OTM with Fleet Management to manage fleets, outbound, inbound, and inter-facility movements, and to eventually provide the capability to scale and grow through brokered services.
Clayton Homes is the first company to leverage OTM to ship homes which creates some complex and unique requirements. In this session, learn how Clayton Homes, together with Accenture, configured OTM to accommodate oversized shipping of home sections which vary in length, width, and height. Handling oversize shipments of varying dimensions was not the only challenge. HBG had to manage the downstream impacts of home shipping like requirements for pilot shipments, complex customer-specific rate structures translated from spreadsheets and a robust accessorial schedule to automate lane-based permit and escort fees and more.
Not only was this transformational to HBG’s business, it was also a tremendous change to their team members and had the capability to impact 40 Home Building Facilities and more than 3000 retailers nationwide. Clayton Homes stayed heavily involved in the training and change management development and execution for this project so we will also discuss their ownership, lessons learned and change management suggestions.

Fleet Sustainability Index™
Today's trucks differ significantly from those manufactured ten to twenty years ago. Businesses aiming to lessen their carbon footprint require methods to initially establish the current status of their transportation fleet and then tools to determine how to assess this fleet in alignment with their internal objectives. Choosing a carrier with a newer truck compared to one from 2010 could lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 30%. ESG and Scope 3 Emissions data at the carrier and asset level is not easy to access other than using data from the EPA SmartWay program. The issue with the SmartWay program is the limited number of carriers and assets available compared to the actual number of carriers and assets in North America. In this session, you will learn how OTM users can leverage data from the Fleet Sustainability Index™ from Sustainable Logistics, LLC., a joint venture between the University of Tennessee Research Foundation and Dr. Alex Scott PhD with the University of Tennessee Department of Supply Chain.
The Fleet Sustainability Index™ provides access to 400,000+ carriers and over 5 Million carrier assets providing CO2 scores at the carrier and asset level which can be leverage in OTM for Carrier Rating, Procurement, and Execution – Carrier Selection. The Index covers all classes of commercial vehicles 1-8, LTL and TL modalities, as well as details such as VIN, Engine Type, Fuel Type, etc..
The Fleet Sustainability Index™ is a comprehensive data service offering emissions factors for virtually every trucking fleet (known as carriers) operating across the United States, allowing reporting on fleets from 1 power unit to 100,000+. These factors quantify the amount of CO2 emitted per mile by carriers, reflecting the equipment utilized in their operations. This invaluable tool empowers users, including shippers, brokers, and third-party logistics providers, to achieve two key objectives:
1) accurately assessing their historical emissions or those of their clients using readily available data such as carrier information and miles traveled, and
2) making informed decisions by selecting and evaluating carriers based on their emissions performance.
Based on sustainability reporting principles established by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), the index relies on observations directly from a company’s supply chain, verified by independent third parties. It is calculated continuously using emissions factors that can be determined over specific time intervals, ensuring rigor as it is derived from authoritative government sources and calculated according to ISSB guidelines. Emissions reports generated using the Fleet Sustainability Index™ align with prevailing international reporting standards.
Hear from Thomas Deakins, Managing Director, University of Tennessee Knoxville Global Supply Chain Institute as he discusses the need for the Fleet Sustainability Index™ and its creation, use cases of the data inside OTM, as well as providing a demo of the Index.
Learning Objective 1
